I am writing to express my deep concern regarding any plans to develop the natural woodland area known as “The Woods”-Palmetto Bay’s last wild sanctuary. This unique green space is more than just undeveloped land; it is a vital refuge for our native wildlife and a priceless ecological resource for our community.
As urban development continues to expand, sanctuaries like The Woods are disappearing at an alarming rate. These rare ecosystems provide shelter and nesting grounds for birds, pollinators, small mammals, and endangered species. Once lost, these natural habitats cannot be replaced.
Preserving The Woods also means investing in the well-being of future generations. Our children deserve the chance to experience local nature firsthand- to learn, explore, and grow up with a relationship to the natural world. We moved to Palmetto Bay because it was beautiful and full of trees. In a time when screen time dominates young lives, protected green spaces are more essential than ever.
Please consider the lasting legacy that protecting this land would leave. Development may offer short-term gains, but conservation offers long-term community & environmental value.
I urge you to vote in favor of protecting The Woods permanently. Let’s be remembered as a community that valued nature and acted with foresight.
THE WOODS -
We moved to Palmetto Bay because it is known as "Village of Parks" and chose our house because it is in front of "The Woods" nature preserve. A year ago it was extended 10 feet to accommodate Perrine school parking. This took place early on a Saturday morning where wildlife were destroyed without any empathy. There was a family of bloodied raccoons, squirrels and a fox left behind to rot and eventually be eaten by turkey vultures. If this small project was so poorly run I can only imagine the entire woods being destroyed. This area especially in school season is treated like a trash can with daily debris left behind. There are multiple contractors who cut the grass on consecutive days costing tax payers unnecessary costs. Please keep the area free from further eradication beautifying our community and ecosystem. We need more trees not concrete. Let's keep our wildlife protected and likelihood of homelessness with expansion out. Expansion will cost our community more money, not less.
