10.D) AN ORDINANCE OF THE MAYOR AND VILLAGE COUNCIL OF THE VILLAGE OF PALMETTO BAY, FLORIDA, REGARDING HEALTH BENEFITS; PROVIDING TWO YEARS OF HEALTH BENEFITS TO ALL CURRENT AND FUTURE COUNCILMEMBERS FOR EACH FOUR YEARS SERVICE ON COUNCIL, WITH THE BENEFIT TO BE RECEIVING FOLLOWING THE END OF THEIR SERVICE; REPEALING ORDINANCE 2017-21; AND PROVIDING FOR CODIFICATION; AND AN EFFECTIVE DATE. (Sponsored by Nick Marano, Village Manager) (Passed on First Reading on July 17, 2023-Special Council Meeting) (This item requires a Third Reading)
Hardly astronomical, and a maximum HAS been provided. $500 per month. For a normal 4 year elected term, the maximum it would cost the Village is $500 per month times 12 months times 5 members, or $30,000. This would be paid (recompensed) for only 2 years out of 4. The budget would have to be increased by about $15,000 a year, total. Not much in a (roughly, total expenditure) $30 million budget. I'm for any incentive to get sane people to run for office here.
I strongly oppose the proposal for Council members to receive ANY benefits AFTER the end of their service term. This would be tantamount to "pension benefits" which are entirely inappropriate for former local elected officials, especially those that are otherwise employed in either private enterprise or by certain unions. Beyond that, no maximum annual amount for health benefits for Council members is even provided, which looks to us like a "blank cheque" arrangement. Palmetto Bay taxpayers deserve full transparency about these benefits .

It only appears to benefit politicians not Palmetto Bayans and the cost would be astronomical
